The government has agreed on a series of tax changes that, if approved by parliament, will see self-employed people paying thousands of euros more to the state every year.

With two of his closest political colleagues under investigation by police, nationalist leader Ján Slota laid a few charges of his own last week, among them that a decade ago, Police Chief Jaroslav Spišiak crashed drunk while on the job, but covered it up with the help of a pair of police Internal Affairs officers who are now senior police officials. Mr Spišiak has dismissed the allegations.

Team Slovakia came within an ace of landing NHL stars Marián Gaborík and Marián Hossa for the World Hockey Championships later this month. But after Mr Hossa’s Chicago Blackhawks and Mr Gaborík’s New York Rangers squeaked into the NHL playoffs on the last weekend of the North American regular hockey season, their compatriots can now only hope that Chicago and New York get knocked out early from the Stanley Cup playoffs, allowing the two speedy forwards to show off their skills in Bratislava.
