While economic growth in Slovakia has bounced back nicely from the global financial crisis, with GDP rising 4 percent last year, the unemployment hits a six-year high.

And while you thought you might have heard the last of former General Prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka, his name made headlines again last week. This time it was for signing a 1.5 million euro contract extension with an IT company without holding a public tender.

Here’s something you don’t see very often: the country’s chief of police, Jaroslav Spišiak, has set some ambitious performance targets for the force this year, and has promised to step down if the police don’t meet these goals.

We’ll be keeping track of Mr Spišiak’s score card, but as for his quitting, don’t hold your breath. And in sports, the country’s top boxing talent, the light heavyweight Tomas ‘the Kid’ Kovacs, won the vacant WBO Europe title after defeating Ugandan Hamza Wandera in 12 rounds.
