The new Hungarian government of Viktor Orban has thrown gasoline on smouldering tensions with Slovakia. It wants to allow ethnic Hungarians living in neighbouring countries, in other words those without permanent residence in Hungary, to acquire Hungarian citizenship.

The ten police officers who filmed themselves abusing Roma boys in the eastern Slovak city of Košice last year will face a criminal trial. The General Prosecutor’s Office presented the state’s case against them to a Košice court last week.

Well, this is a tense time to be a homeowner in Slovakia. Heavy rain last week and over the weekend has produced extensive flooding in the east of the country.

But with the skies not expected to clear until Wednesday, communities all over are at risk. But the news wasn’t all bad last week. Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics bureau, issued growth forecasts for member states that had Slovakia leading the pack.
