A building contractor with close ties to the Robert Fico government stands to profit as the cabinet hikes its freeway construction budget by more than a billion euros.

The country’s new language police sprang into action last week, targeting a leaflet advertising a performance by a Hungarian-language amateur comedy troupe.

Opposition to proposed logging and development in the High Tatras mountain reserve is growing. The Slovak Academy of Sciences is now calling on the government not to approve an Environment Ministry proposal to radically reduce the amount of land in the Tatras that is shielded from human impact . The Environment Ministry’s plans have also triggered civic protests such as on Bratislava’s SNP square last weekend.

Bratislava residents have two new destinations to enjoy this week, one in the forest park overlooking the city, and the other downtown along the banks of the Danube river .
